Meritline.com Verified Buyer This is a nice lantern, compact, bright enough, and the dimmer feature is nice. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that I can get only get it to work with regular AA batteries, not rechargeables. I wouldn't have purchased it if I had known that would be an issue--I've tried two different brands of freshly charged AA's and neither works. If anyone has a suggestion, please let me know. (Two reviewers have mentioned using rechargeables, which influenced my decision to purchase the lantern.) My rechargeables are 1.2V, which may be the problem, but that is pretty standard for rechargeable AAs, I think. (They measure as 1.3V when charged.)

Overall it is good, I bought this for camping. Looks like it consumes more battery, I use it occasionally so I will give 100% mark, because on this price you can not expect more.

The lantern was as described. Thus far it works very well. We use it in the evening on our deck. Don't let the low price fool you, it will perform well for you.

Work great. My son is 4 so they are just the right size or him to carry around. We took them on our camping trip and were very pleased with them. They put out alot of light! The small size and great preformance make them great for camping or emergencies, and you can't beat the price.

The added on compass did not always point to north and you will to move the lantern back & forth and up down to make it work. Other are fine.

Great product. I have two of them. My son used one to do his homework when the power went out one night. It is a very bright light, but very harsh if you look directly at it. The compass on the top is quite lame, more funny than anything.

The dim feature is nice, although I tend to keep the lanterns running at full brightness. They are small and lightweight. I will use them as a compliment to propane laterns, which cannot be used inside a tent. The compasses on both were near useless; however, I was not planning to use them anyway. I find lanterns a great value and would recommend them.

On lowe it gives just enough light so you don't trip over anything. On full bright, you need sunglasses to look at it :-) I recommend it.

The battery connection is a little finicky, as others have mentioned. It also turns out to be a somewhat impractical shape for packing - the rectangular collapsing ones would be better.

The first unit was shipped broken (broke during assembly) but Meritline made it right. The compass barely works, more for looks. It's smaller than expected (no size listed in description) it's about 7 1/2" tall to the top of the handle (when in up position), about 6 3/8" to the top of the compass, and about 3" accross at the base. It's pretty bright for it's size. There is no guide/directions for how to insert the batteries, so just remember the flat end goes to the spring. My 5yr nephew really likes it. I think it's a good buy at $6.99 with free shipping.

Brightness and construction quality are a little better than expected. Defnitely bright enough for a tent lantern. Mayeb about the equivalent of a 25 watt bulb. LED color is typical harsh bright white and is almost to bright to look at when on full. Dimmer works well with nice light variability. Compass works, though I wouldn't rely on it. I recommend this product if you want a value-priced compact lantern.

Meritline.com Verified Buyer Works reliably. Light is not super bright but fine for dark rooms or cap sites or the picnic table. Compass does work but. I use mine as a handy helper lamp so I don't need to waste house lights. I use up batteries that would otherwise go to recycling but still have some usable voltage. Those "dead" batteries will run this lamp for days!

Meritline.com Verified Buyer The battery problem some people are having is easily solved. It's caused by some batteries having a less-protruding button (the positive terminal) on top. The trend is away from AA batteries with sticky-outy buttons, and this is especially true of modern rechargeables. The easiest solution is to insert an awl or a jeweler's screwdriver between the wall of the battery compartment and the sheet-metal bits designed to make contact with the (+) terminal, then pry the metal outward toward the batteries' (+) terminals, enough to make contact.

Initially I thought it wasn't bright enough until I found out I have a dead battery among the 3 batteries. Recharging all the NiMH batteries give it enough juice to shine brightly. It is compact and bright enough for my use.

Meritline.com Verified Buyer I really like this little thing. Gives out lots of bright light without a whole lot of juice. I took it camping. It was perfect for a late dinner and lit the whole campsite on it's highest setting. I turned it to low to get ready for bed in the tent. One defect: The compass popped out, so I won't give it full rating. However, I glued it back in and it's still there. I wouldn't use that compass for orienteering, but it's pretty helpful when you are in a new place.

Meritline.com Verified Buyer The light only shines at its brightest setting when the batteries are very fresh. After that it dims it automatically to save battery life. If you want a light that stays bright at the expense of shorter battery life, look elsewhere.

i've bought 2 of these now and they both had they same problems. some kind of wiring or connection problem so that if you tap it against something it will improve the light intensity for a while. sometimes turn it upside down and tap the top against something and then try the reverse. also, sometimes if i use freshly charged NIMH batteries there is no light, then i replace one of those batts with a half drained NIMH and it lights up fine. idk what that means, maybe some electrical engineer can let us know. overall though, if you can get it to work, it lasts so long on 3 x AA batts (30, 40 or 50 hours maybe depending on how you select the dial) that its well worth the money. just would save everyone a bunch of wasted time if Meritline would tell the supplier to spend more money on the connections and then just double the damn price. then i would recommend this lantern to anyone because of the excellent intensity and duration of light it throws from just 3 x AA batteries.

The lanterns construction is ok at best. If you drop it... it will break. I think the 11 LED smaller camping light throws just as much light. The compass is all but useless. My son will love this.

Meritline.com Verified Buyer I love these little things for power outages, camping etc. With the recent hurricane I still don't have power and they come in really handy. Not super construction, but they work just fine so far and I have had about 4 of them for a year or so with using them 4 times or so. I just ordered another 10 for family and friends who were complaining about having to light candles because they are on sale. For $6 each (on sale), who can complain? I use regular batteries in them not rechargeable and I have yet to replace. Just buy the batteries when they go on sale on amazon in 20 packs!

Meritline.com Verified Buyer These mini lanterns sold here are pretty cool. This particular one arrived defective where the lantern could not be turned off. Meritline replaced it with a working one. Here are my impressions. The styling is really nice. The silver look gives it a modern twist on a classic shape. The switch is tad loose but gives the device more usefulness. The lantern provides a lot of light for the size. The LEDs are diffused so that the lights are not blinding. With a pair of these and fresh batteries, you can read w/o too much eye strain. The compass is water filled and is useful to me. Other lanterns that have this feature are not water filled. So this is a plus. The battery has a double cover which will enhance the water protection although I wouldn't use it in the rain. Overall, it casts a nice fairly smooth beam.

I may get one for each room in the house, in case the power goes out. They are pretty bright for the size, and LEDs don't use up batteries as fast as incandescent (regular) bulbs. My only criticism, and it's minor, is that the carrying handle is pretty flimsy and can snap off easily.

Very impressive lantern! This unit is surprising bright and works well. It puts out about the same amount of light as a much larger fluorescent lantern I have that uses 2x very large 6v batteries. The dimmer dial works great and is a MUST if you are reading etc. Compass is kind of a gimmick but overall an excellent value light.

My wife uses this in Costa Rica while I am working here in the states. She loved this little guy and is her favorite when the lights go out, which during rainy season is fairly frequently. Great little light and stingy on batteries, although we use rechargeables.
