Wonderful product overall. The eSATA speed is almost double of the USB2 connection. And for those who thought you will need a 12V DC power, no worries. Just plug in the eSATA cable first, then connect the USB plug to a USB powered port and it will run in eSATA mode. Even runs my WD Scorpio Black 7200rpm drive just fine. Gets a little warm, hence I share the same gripes with some other reviewers about the enclosure being too plasticky.

It's nice the USB cable folds into the enclosure. Disassembling the enclosure requires some skill as the plastic tabs that hold the case together a very fragile. Be aware that eSATA REQUIRES an external power supply. So if you are expecting to purchase this as an eSATA enclosure, be sure to locate (I can't find one) a 12V power supply for this enclosure.

Will this product accommodate a 12mm drive, or does it only fit a 9.5mm drive? No one ever specifies that for these enclosures!

I bought this knowing it was not designed to fit the 12mm drive I wanted to use externally. I have not been able to find even one 2.5-inch enclosure that does. I bet that I would be able to "mod" this one to at least make it work. I won that bet. Using a Dremel tool and some creativity, I managed to mount the drive and even get the red plastic outer cover back on (mostly). The 4200 RPM 200GB Fujitsu drive I use in it generates almost no heat, but the enclosure's circuit board does get disconcertingly hot. I use this with "portable" apps. I have not tried the one-touch-backup feature.

I have a 12mm 2.5-inch SATA drive, just as another reviewer had; the more common thickness of laptop drives is 9.5mm, but 12mm is NOT non-standard. This product, just like every other enclosure I have examined, does not accept 12mm drives; even enclosures that claim to be compatible with ALL laptop drives do not. Like the other reviewer, I managed to make my drive fit, after some modding with a Dremel tool. The result isn't perfect, but it works. The circuit board gets unacceptably hot, however.

Nice case for the price. Having USB and eSATA is a bonus. There is a port for an external power supply, however there is no notation on the case as to what plug-type is expected (5V? - -C- ?) Also there is no metal in this case, so don't expect to run a drive for long periods of time...no passive cooling! Otherwise, it lost a star for the all-plastic design, but otherwise it is a nice case for the price.

This is an awesome product. I imagine the looks like a lady bug. So I have tested some. The eSATA connection does not require external AC 12V adapter. A reviewer says the eSATA connects first then the USB connects to a PC USB port. Then it works as an eSATA device. Some reviewer says it does not work. I suppose there is some compatibility issues with a SATA controller as a PC motherboard and a 2.5” HDD drive that is install in the enclosure. My PC has Intel ICH9R controller. And the HDD is Seagate Momentus ST90250N1A1AS 5400.4. S.M.A.R.T info goes thru the enclosure to PC both of the USB and the eSATA interface. Linux system, which is installed into the HDD, boot is available from the USB. I’ve not tested yet this from the eSATA, however I suppose it may be no problem. A little conf is a plastic latch that is easier to be broken. It is not a big problem. It can be applied an adhesive tape.

Great product for the price.... The built in USB cable is very handy for travel. Makes use of old laptop hard drives. I have not tried the eSATA feature yet.

This is my second time ordering this item. I've had a few different USB cases for 2.5" SATA drives over the years, but this one is my favorite. I actually like the way it looks and don't think it looks cheap at all, but the proof is that the first one I bought has been going strong for almost a year and I've used it both as a USB and as a eSATA drive. Works well and keeps on working too. I paid more for it last time, but for $8+change it's a steal on sale.

I would give it a 5 star if the quality is better. Overall it does the job, very easy to install and works right away with windows 7 in USB and in eSATA mode. No external power supply required is a big plus, just use the usb cable that's on the case. The only downside so far is the quality of the usb cable. Mine is just couple month old and it already has crack in the joint part, I can see wire hanging out. I used super glue to put it back and hopefully it will last longer.

This is the cheapest case I saw- and it feels like it. All plastic- and probably won't last that long. But- we'll see. It's been a few weeks... still ok.

Good product, quite fast data transfer. However, there's no openings on this enclosure to allow air flow. If your HDD tends to get hot, this may be a concern.

Received my order much sooner than I had expected, which was a nice surprise. The item was in retail packaging, including an attached USB cable; driver/software disk for One-Touch Backup; a tiny screwdriver for opening the case more easily; and a couple of small hard drive screws. Also included was a concise manual in halfway decent English (compared with many other items sourced from Asia). Take the time to read the manual before assembling the drive into the case. It is pretty straightforward, but RTFM definitely helped the process. Opening the case to install the drive should be done carefully, as I can see that one could possibly damage it if too much force is used. This case is, in my opinion, better for uses where you are going to install a drive and use it, as opposed to needing to swap out drives regularly. At this price, you can likely afford to buy several of them anyway. I installed my drive without the included screws because I did not see any obvious place

This disk enclosure is very well-made. It is very convenient because the USB cord fits into the side of the casing so it is protected. The order arrived right away and the enclosure was in great shape. I would definitely order another one!

This enclosure promises eSata and more, but all you get is USB and a big question mark (?) about why eSata fails to function. I can't figure it out, ie maybe it needs A/C power (an adapter) to work, but then again "what" AC adapter since one doesn't come with the kit. The enclosure is cheap, flimsy plastic on aluminum...never a good combination, so I wonder how many take-aparts it can survive before something snaps and breaks. The sole and only redeeming factor is the captive USB cable, so that's ok, but little else is...even the color combo(red/black) kindof sucks. Thus I have to ask myself "what's to recommend?" I cannot do that in this case, and suggest that your $$ is better spent on a different enclosure. Even the directions are difficult to 'get' and I am pretty experienced with various enclosure types--this thing takes some savvy to assemble with a HD I assure you! All in all I think Meritline should dismiss this from their catalog and sell only basic and workable enclos

The built-in cable is very convenient and easy to carry with. I have several other USB enclosures. They use different type of usb cables and it's getting harder and harder to find the right one. I now don't need to worry about the cable anymore. And I can make use of my old 80 SATA hard drive from my broken laptop. Recommended. the only complain I have is the case is HARD plastics. Wish they are soft rubber. (It's just too slippery.)

Could not get eSata to work, which is main reason I bought this. USB works OK. Integrated USB cable: nice to have, but too short for my use.

Very easy to put together with the HD once you figure out the plastic clasps (they snap off a little violently), and works like a charm. The built-in cable is great too. After having a bad experience with a non-working case before (different one, and a different seller if I recall), this one was a nice surprise.

The case itself is very nice .. but I wish the one touch backup function did not require a device driver install. Other one touch drives do not require a driver install.

It seems to me that this enclosure will only hold a 9.5mm drive. I inserted an older Western Digital SATA 160 gig from my old laptop and the case won't close tightly over the drive. Thank goodness for the red outer shell to help hold it together. I do like the cord storage aspect of it. No problem booting the new drive up to run.

Purchased this in Apri1 2011. It lasted a little until June 2012 before it won't detect the drive using USB or e-SATA. The hard drive works fine elsewhere. Consider it disposable.

I bought a couple of these, and they're very handy. I was intrigued by the eSATA port, but with no included power supply, haven't even tried it. USB 2.0 is rock solid, though, and this is perfect for turning that old laptop drive into handy portable storage.

Opening the internal part of the enclosure requires some care -- the plastic tabs that hold the case together are very fragile. Good for a backup drive or transferring data to a new laptop hard drive, but may not be durable enough for serious travel. Overall, worth the price!

This is a nifty little enclosure. I especially like that the USB cable is built-in so you don't have to drag one around with you where ever you go. I haven't tested the eSATA yet. NOTE: The kit came with 2 small screws which don't seem to go anywhere but that's okay because the drive fits snugly and once the case is closed, nothing is going to move inside.

Installed an old 40GB 2.5" SATA drive without any problems. Plastic enclosure is well made and integrated USB cable is helpful. Plugged in to Win7 running laptop and drive was recognized and ready to use in few seconds. Note: I Have not used the eSata so I cannot report on it.
