I wouldn't say that this makes as much improvement in contrast as the pictures would suggest, but it does help some, reduces lens flare, and most importantly, it helps protect your lens from damage to the lens element and body of the lens. The plastic hood takes the beating, not yout lens. The 2 things I buy with every lens is a protective filter and a hood. I would reccomend doing the same.

Mine arrived with one of the pressure pin peices of plastic coming off, but all it needed was a dab of superglue and it was fine. It's a little more stiff to slide it on and off then the cannon equivalent, but it does the job. No felt inner lining, just all out black plastic.
