These things expanded from tiny crystals to fill about 2/3 of a quart Mason jar.

These seem to work well and look cool. I have only had them for a week now, but they hold a lot of water and support the plant in the vase. The colors are a nice option also.

The product is actually labelled 'mud' instead of soil, and the intstructions were written by someone who does not have proper English. Other than that, the little crystal soil balls are great for bamboo but I had difficulty using them for other water-base plants as they offered no support for the plant. They are great for displays with bamboo though, or just water displays in general.

Pros: fun, cheap Cons: 5 grams is a very small quantity, even allowing for expansion; the "Engrish" instructions on the package are impossible to understand. Engrish example: "2. Flora that chooses fitly living the cool and damp environment, to washing their mud."

These are worth buying simply to witness the physical feat they perform. One tiny packet of these beads dumped into a liter of water will, in about twelve hours, *drink* that water to the point that they stand heaped clear *out* of the water, filling a two-quart bowl to the brim! I have to take back two points for the packet's "instructions", since strictly speaking the instructions on a new product ought to be readable. I'm giving back one point because the packet's instructions are *hilarious*. From the illustrated instructions captioned in Italian, to the printed instructions in English translated from Italian translated from Cantonese by someone who lacked the words "ball" or "soil" for any of these three languages, these are a comedy gem guaranteed to brighten any day. You might even plant something in them!

I bought four packs of the balls and gave two away. We all were amazed at how much they grew and filled up the vases. I've had a plant in mine for several weeks now and it's going strong. The different colored balls makes it look so pretty!
