It's not really a surprise, but the description is wrong. It's actually a 3 Mode (High, Mid, Flash). On high it pulls about 3A from a fresh 18650 and gets very hot (almost too hot to touch!) after 5 minutes of use with no airflow. It was sitting on my desk while I was testing battery performance, after a few minutes I noticed an odd smell, not quite burning, more like the smell you get from the back of a TV that's been on for a while. If you plan to use this on high for a long time, wear gloves or move around a bit for some airflow! It is very bright and the push pull focus works well. Flood beam is very smooth with no hotspot, approx 80deg beam. Zoom shows the LED pattern in the beam and its about 20-25deg. PROBLEM! There is no contact between the LED pill and the case. It got hot enough to desolder itself! Should be an easy fix, but I would suggest you open it up and add some heatsink adhesive!

Review update. I'm going to have to drop two stars on this on. After using the belt clip a few times it broke at the top near the mounting screws. It does not seem to be made of spring steel and there is a large hole that really weakens the clip right where it needs to be the strongest. I would love to buy more of these lights, they are compact and powerful, but the poor heatsinking and weak belt clip are stopping me.

Serious design flaws; avoid this flashlight. Among the Cree XM-L T6 flashlights I have, this was the weakest. The "reflector" is a flat disc of white plastic. The output is not bright. The inside of the barrel is black, so when you zoom in, the beam gets narrower, but not brighter. And the most serious flaw of all, it died after 10 minutes of use. The flashlight was *burning hot*. One of the leads to the LED star got hot enough to desolder itself. There's minimal contact (and no heat-transfer grease) between the LED star and the body of the flashlight. I'll add one more line: do not buy this flashlight. Its light output is poor, the zoom function is weak, and it'll burn out on you. Meritline was good, and refunded my purchase price. Thanks Meritline!

Tip on heatsinking these and similar flashlights.Get a 30g thermal grease syringe from a popular site.Screw out pill using tweezers/lock ring pliers etc,pry circuit board from bottom, fill in w/paste,press ckt bd back on,clean up(messy).I actually use the th.grease to'lube'/fill-in pill threads; provides even better heat transfer;I really feel it.I carefully popped off plastic front isolator disk under lens.Mine is NOT from Meritline-I only get ~1.6A Hi,but I like it,wld like ML version(3A per reviewer).
