This unit worked well with my XP operating system (I bought it for that system) The speed characteristics are about the same as Ethernet wired internet. However, for my printer sharing application it worked very well. As I learned, the easier way to do printer sharing is if all computers are on a wireless system, same operating system and a printer that has the required drivers. It does exactly what I wanted it to do, that's why I rated it as excellent

I've had this unit for a while now, and have had mixed results. I've had intermittent problems with it resetting itself, losing signal, etc., generally behaving very unstable. I investigated the power issue some other reviewers have noted, and saw that the voltage at the device would sometimes drop to around 4 volts, well under the proper 5. The current draw was within the USB spec of 500 mA, but it does bounce around a lot with traffic, so I think it could be spiking a little high, and thus causing erratic voltage drops. I spliced an external 5V power source into a USB extension cable and that would (so far) appear to have resolved this issue! So perhaps my laptop just doesn't have the oomph required. A more standard solution would be a powered USB hub. ALL THAT SAID though, I don't find the range or networks detected to be substantially better than my built-in Wi-Fi, but being able to relocate the adapter and antenna, and get 'N' speeds, was a plus for me.

I was very pleased. This product worked better than the more expensive one I was using before.

Disregard my last two reviews. Apparently even though those drivers are much newer than the drivers that come with this usb adapter, they were somewhat mislabeled after testing them. After further searching, here is a the latest confirmed driver, XP/Vista/Win 7 3.2.11.0, and Win 8 5.0.0.0 It's kind of hard to find with all the mislabeled drivers at driver websites and the Ralink website down. Only a few places actually have the latest. http://fichiers.touslesdrivers.com/35985/IS_STA_RT2870_D-3.2.11.0_VA-3.2.11.0_W7-3.2.11.0_W8-5.0.0.0_RU-5.0.1.0_101512_1.5.19.2WP_Free.exe

This worked as it should as far as picking up wireless "hot spots." However, it seemed to not get any extra range where I usually access the wireless network.

I bought this to ferret out more and stronger Wi-Fi signals, but I've got to say that it performs rather the same as the internal Intel adapter in my Acer laptop. That said, I've found that this machine is already pretty good compared to other adapters and computers I've tried. I also figured since it has an external antenna connection (which my laptop does not), I can try one of those Yagi antennas to pick up Wi-Fi across state lines, right? Well not really, the included antenna actually works better. Nonetheless, I'm giving it an above-average rating, since it does upgrade me to 'N' speeds, and allows me to extend the USB and/or antenna connection to try different positioning. Windows 7 also picked up drivers without issue. I did try the included software to see if that had any options to help the range, but no. Even if I'm not overly impressed by the range or sensitivity, at the sale price it's still a good deal and gives me some new features.

I found that the reception this adapter offered wasn't significantly better than the adapter it was meant to replace (DLink DWA131), which is about 1/6 the size of the Powerlink with no external antenna. I can definitely say it did not get 2X the signal strength, which is what the description claims. But, it works reasonable well, which is good enough.

This has been an excellent purchase. I was using a Cisco adapter getting about 2mbps. I replaced it with this and immediately got 8mbps without any other changes. I'm very pleased with my purchase and will buy again if I need to connect from a long distance. I was amazed at how well this worked. Both Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.4 recognized it immediately.

First a caution. This unit pulls a good bit of current so if your USB port is not up to the load there is an excellent probability it will not work correctly. (this is a common problem with high power USB devices) The set up and utility is not intuitive I had to play debug tech to get it to work. Last the receiver is sensitive and works well in an environment with a lot of wifi transmitters. (we live in a complex where every tenant and his brother has wifi set up. Have not had the opportunity to check the transmit range but if it's similar to the RX range it should do well. I'll be testing with a Mac BookPro with the silver metal case sometime this week and will post results. Last it's the nature of these small RF connectors with gain antennas to be easy to break. Best be gentle with the hardware as it will snap at a stress point.
