Haven't actually used the fire starter at this point but they look to be the same quality as those in the sports stores. The meritline's price was great over stores in my area, so as far as I'm concerned it was a no brainer buy.

The striker doesn't look like it will hold-up forever, but the steel is substantial, and that's the most important part

Nice large "flint" however "steel" is painted & does not product sparks when struck against flint. I used a pocket knife as a striker & it produce a lot of large sparks. OK value for the money - just don't paint the steel!

The magnesium stick is of good quality, excellent price with the coupon, however that tiny metal scrapper is not to be depended on for emergency fire starter. It gets dull quickly, and no grip leverage. suggestion: use a sharp edge rock, or better yet buy the Meritline multi-tool, and use the tiny jagged saw to shave and spark the magnesium stick. http://www.meritline.com/6-in-1-multi-tool-stainless-steel-pocket-plier-with-bright-led-light-silver---p-25417.aspx

Works very well. You have to scrape the black coating off first to get a good spark. I tried it on a cotton ball dipped in some petroleum jelly, and it made a nice little fireball, perfect to start a fire with.

Reliable and inexpensive. Don't let "made in China" deter you because, for the price, this is the best I've seen on the Internet...at a quarter the price of a much smaller "name brand" rod. After my first field test while camping in humid conditions by the beach, I purchased a total of 14 for "stocking-stuffers" for my kids and family. I would not hesitate to purchase more.

Apparently some do not understand completely what this product is. It is more than just a flint-and-steel although it does perform that task well and will work fine that way if you have very dry tinder or some accelerant. It is made out of magnesium. It is the magnesium that creates the high temperature spark. To make full use of the product, use the supplied (steel) blade to scrape shavings off the large (magnesium) rod. Do this slowly and build a small pile on top of your tinder. You will need to scrape through the black coating on the large rod using the unpainted section of the green steel. You will get small shavings the size of fine ground pepper. Then put the tip of the large rod into the pile and slide the steel quickly against the rod. This will give you a shower of sparks that will ignite the shavings...and the surrounding tinder. It works very well. Excellent price and value.

I just received this today & was very pleased. I have bought quite a number of firesteels and have tried a fair number of "basic" ones. As I measure it, it's about 1" of handle and an additional 3.25" of steel, giving it a nice length to run the striker down. I use the back of the saw on my Leatherman Charge Tii but, the included striker works fine. Two tips. One, scrape off the black coating on the side you're going to be striking before expecting a shower of sparks. Two, The included striker is painted except for about an inch of one side. Use the unpainted side. Great value for the money. I have too many steels, but might buy a couple more anyway!

Very nice firesteel for the money. Larger than I expected and better quality too. The included piece-o-hacksaw striker works surprisingly well, but I partnered it with another striker I had and have it in my camping bag. Highly recommended. It's just as good as steels costing a more.

I've never used flint and steel before, so I didn't get it working right away. Eventually, I used the serrated end at a 45 degree angle and it started shooting a blanket of sparks.

I don't know anything about how you are supposed to use flint and steel, but it only seemed to work when I scrapped using the jagged edge of the steel. Took a bit to get it started, but then it made a nice barrage of sparks.

Bought one of these awhile back. A little flimsy where the plastic handle attached (it came loose) but when you strike it properly you should see the sparks shoot out! Wouldn't use it for normal camping, but it will come in handy if my lighter ever dies while camping again. For this price, you can't lose!

Works great, didnt expect much since it was only $1.64 (on sale), but it produces a pretty good spark, the scraper is sharpen on one end, so it had a good grip to it. It certainly surpassed my expectation.

Yeah, this sparks as. I halfheartedly tried to ignite a sheet of printer paper with no luck (admittedly didn't follow the directions as I'm now reading on the product page). I suppose if I scraped a pile of magnesium or soaked the paper in gasoline it would create blaze. I noted that another piece of steel yields more sparks.

I’m a scout leader and have worked with teaching the boys with the “boy scout” flint and steel. This is a bit larger then the scout branded one but also is much easier to start fires with. My new boys had no issues prepping and starting fires with this flint and steel. ****************************** It does take some time to break it in. At first I was disappointed but keep striking on it 20-50 times after you get through the black coating on the flint and paint on the steel it will start to throw a larger hot spark. This is survival grade and I would take it, a knive and a soup can to boil water and would be good to go in a survival situation.

Excellent product! Larger than expected, much easier to hold and use than the older ones I used as a kid. Good sized finger grip. Delivers an excellent spark. Arrived with some oxidation or maybe a safety coating on the "flint" / magnesium side that had to be scrapped off but once it was the spark was excellent. Nearly perfect, I will buy these again when the price is right! Item exceeded every expectation.

Went camping with my family a few weeks ago. Just after a storm, none of our matches would light. They were dry, but we couldn't get a good strike due to the humidity. Tired and hungry. Remembered that I had ordered this a few years ago for use in an emergency. Sparked right up and dinner was on. Every camper should have a set.

These are great! Especially when you can catch them with a discount code. I don't quite like the striker that it comes with, but it does work when you need it to. You get better sparks using a knife, but in a situation when you can't be bothered with dulling your knife edge, the striker will work fine. For those who can't get it to "work," scrape off the outer black coating first. You'll get much better sparks after that is done. Even at regular price, it's a steel. You can't get a flint this large for that price locally.

Ordered five for the price of one at other stores. Large sticks, useful spark. Requires proper tinder, don't expect to start a fire with this unless you've prepared the right tinder and kindling. But perfect if you know how to use one. Equally high quality as those you buy from more "mainstream" online stores!

Nice little tool. The steel starter that comes with it, as others have mentioned, is garbage. I've found the most effective starter is a butter knife! Of course, any knife will do. But I definitely wouldn't depend on the included starter. Not sure how long the magnesium rod will last but it should last a good amount of time.

This product work and is great for the price. Not as good as other starters I've used, but they are a bit more pricey. The key to this starter is scraping the paint off. The metal scraper doesn't look like it's going to hold up nearly as long as the magnesium stick, so it wouldn't be a bad idea to keep a jagged knife or perhaps multi-tool saw blade handy as a backup.

missing something: instructons

***** This is an official reply from Meritline.com *****
How to Use: Place the flint on ground upwardly and put the scraper vertically to the flint, then scrape some magnesium powder on some inflammable materials, like paper or branch. Place the flint on ground at about 45° and 2.5 cm from the magnesium powder scraped, then scrape the flint fast to produce spark so as to light up the inflammable material.

Works well, good quality magnesium stick. The magnesium stick is great but the metal striker isn't very good. Doesn't produce a very good spark. I used a original Swedish Firesteel striker on this mag stick and created a much, much better spark to light a cottonball with a bit of vasoline rubbed on. Basically, the mag stick is very good but the metal striker sucks compared to the Swedish Firesteel striker. Overall, considering the price, you can't beat this. You can pick up quite a few of these for the same price as one original Firesteel. I would recommend using a knife or a different (better) striker with these sticks and you'll be happy.

Good for causing arthritis! No instructions with the unit, had to come to the website to find the instructions. Should have a video showing how to use this. After scraping the bar about 20 times I was able to get s small spark once! Better off carrying a waterproof match case!

As a lot of reviews say, you have to scrap off the black coating before you can get any sparks, this is true. But once the coating is off a blanket of sparks come shooting out.

takes a few scratch attempts to get sparks flying, but works great. pack it in a watertight container [even a ziplock baggie] with a handfull of cotton balls, you will get a fire going with this. Much more $$ elsewhere, good price here!

I finally figured out how to work with it. Spark is impressive, and I assume they can be harvested even when the metal is wet, so it looks like a good deal. I hope Terry Jones from Gainesville, Fl, doesn't have one of these to use with his Korans...

At $1.49 with a coupon code I thought it would be worth trying. I've never used a firesteel before, but after reading the reviews on this site and looking at a few other sites I tried a few techniques. The first thing I did was scrape off the black coating on a section. I tried scraping using both the unpainted side of the scraper and the serrated edge of the scraper. In both cases I was able to create sparks but was never able to light a crinkled up piece of newspaper.

Works great! You have to scrap the black off until you see silver. Easy to start a fire with some pocket lint or lint from your dryer. My 11 year old had no problems starting a fire.

this is my second one I purchased, and it works just great, EVEN MY 10 yr old son can get it to spark. it does require that you scrape down until you see the 'silver' then a good swift downward stroke and 'thar be fire'. I have one I keep in my car, never know when I might need to light a fire under someone or something. sorry Jeff wasn't able to make the sparks fly.

Great price for an excellent product, I buy one every time it goes on sale! The first time it took a few tries to figure out how to hold the striker, but after that... LOOKOUT THERE'S FIRE!

IMPORTANT IF YOU ORDERED THIS. YOU HAVE TO USED THE UNPAINTED PART OF THE STEEL TO SCRAPE SOME OF THE PAINT OFF OF THE MAGNESIUM STICK TO GET IT WORK. SCRAPED OFF A SECTION AND IT SHOWERED SPARKS. use the unpainted part of the steel to scrape the unpainted stick WORKS GREAT

I am pleased with the firesteel. I've used it on a couple of camping trips and it generates enough sparks reliably to start fires. It was a good value, especially with the coupon code.

These were an excellent buy. Thicker than they look in the pic. Throws a huge shower of sparks. As good as the Swedish steel ones that sell for for 5 times the price. Came back and bought a couple more for the camphouse.

Once you scrape the layer of wax/paint off the flint bar, it works like a charm.

This is a total blast. My military neighbors say it is essentially what the Army hands out. Makes great, hot sparks. It takes practice to learn how to make a fire though. My son the camper used it on a recent trip. Guess I will never see that one again....:)

Just got mine today... It's SUPER sturdy. The flint rod has a good sized, solid, finger grip at one end. The striker is just the right size for your fingers...and has a finished/painted surface; which makes holding on to it easier. The striker also has a side shaped specifically for sparking the flint. Even the the piece that tethers the two together is nice and thick... Overall a superb value; I picked mine up on sale, but it's still a good price at $3.19

Much better than expected for the price. Its larger than it appears in the images. I was expecting a striker much smaller. The rod is about 4 inches long and as big around or a little larger than a pencil. Using the included striker it produces a hot shower of sparks with little effort. Meritline comes through!

First you have to scrape the black paint until you see silver, then with so little scraped dust on paper, start scraping faster and watch the sparks go wild. At first I thought I was doing something wrong, because nothing was happening, then super hot sparks burned through the paper.
