Successfully auto-selects based on battery's voltage except when a battery has been over-discharged. A LiFePO4 battery can discharge to ~1v, for example. The charger assumes it's an alkaline, NiCd, or NiMH, and boosts charge rate, but only to ~1.5v, when it switches to a low-current trickle charge. Since it only takes a few seconds of charging an over-discharged lithium battery to bring the voltage back up to a reasonable level, you can simply nudge the battery out of position in the charger and nudge it back into position, so the charger checks the voltage of the battery again to realize it's a lithium battery. Don't be fooled into thinking the charger is not charging when the light changes from red to green. It's still outputting ~30-70mA, which is often required to prevent very dangerous over-charging situations, where the energy is not wholly accepted by the battery and transforms into heat within the battery, causing dangerous gas buildup.
