The short length is its most useful feature! -- Many USB devices are too fat to fit the close spacing of USB ports on a laptop, or block adjacent ports. This short adapter turns those bulky peripherals (card readers, flash sticks, etc.) into "good neighbors!" Another reviewer has also mentioned that keeping one or more of these permanently attached to an expensive device will reduce wear-and-tear on the associated port when you make frequent connects/disconnects. On the down side, I haven't found any benefit to the right-angle female A-connector, and it prevents attached items from laying flat. Also, the metal on the female end is exposed and makes it all-too-easy for static electricity to be discharged into attached devices; I suspect that extending the molded plastic to cover the female end is something of a "big deal" because there are very few manufacturers making cables this way. note to deltaman 1/25/2010: the exposed metal is the USB static guard. It's safely grounded to the round hole of the AC outlet, and insulated from the USB circuit.

This is exactly what I needed --- a SHORT USB-cable. I use this to attach a bulky USB TV-tuner to my desktop PC. This cable replaces a 6-foot extension cable which has been formerly used --- and had been far longer than necessary. The SHORT cable reduced my cable-clutter.
