I haven't purchased this, I just wanted to note for anyone considering it that it is not a signal converter; it's not going to let you connect to a network using a USB port. It's just a plug adapter, which is of limited usefulness (honestly, I can't think of one reason to have this).

The only use I can think of (for this item) is to extend a USB device from one room to another. To do this, the device would have to have it's own power, and the adapter would have to be pin-out identical on both ends. Then if you're Cat-# cable is going through a punch-down box or switch, it still might not work.

a note about the APC UPS usage, the outlet on the back of some APC UPS look like they take an RJ45 but they actually take a RJ10 that has 10-pins (re: 5 pairs) compared to 8 pins on a RJ45. APC only uses 4 wires but intentionally made this proprietary.

This might be used if you have an APC uninterruptable power supply that uses an RJ45 to USB cable to connect to the computer. You could use this if you do not have the custom cable that comes with the UPS.

People, get a clue. This isn't going to magically turn your ethernet port into a USB port (nothing does that) nor let you extend your USB connection (buy a male to female USB extender for that but observe length limitations). It is unlikely that anyone who buys this will ever get it to do what they want, although as speculated it might help APC UPS users who have misplaced their original equipment.

Ordered a pair of these to extend usb port and to attach a wifi usb airlink to. Both of them arrived DOA. Not worth the price even at the low price they are offer at.

I too have not purchased this but am considering doing so to connect my external har drive to my network via either net. Any thoughts/siggestions on if this would work? the Hard drive has its own AC power supply.

I tried to use this adapter with a computer mouse and a flash drive and neither worked. Am I doing something wrong? Do I have to activate this device? Please help--all USB ports on laptop are broken and I really need a computer mouse.

I am looking to use this in more than one way: To connect to a 4port Mini USB HUB with power adapter. To connect to a USB External 1TB Hard Drive. I guess if you don't have a ethernet cable handy, then to connect two computers together via USB male to male.
