Who doesn’t want their garden to look its absolute best? Especially with spring knocking at the door. We all have a little more time and motivation to get up off the couch and do something useful while enjoying some fresh air and getting vitamin D from the sun.
This is why we decided to prepare this simple 5-step guide to the garden of your dreams.
Step 1 – Pick a Spot
First of all, it’s necessary to find out what kind of conditions the flowers you’re about to plant need. Is it sun, shade or perhaps a little bit of everything? It’s something you need to plan ahead for – because once you plant them, changing up the spots is not going to be easy and it’s not going to be fun. Our advice, in this case, is to assess your space, do the research on different types of flowers you could actually put in your garden and only then make your decision. If you’re not a fan of looking for advice online, you can always try signing up for a floristry workshop or a plant workshop. You can learn some practical skills and get a ton of new information on this subject. Tutors are usually very knowledgeable and helpful. One final thought for this step – as a rule of thumb, part shade means 4 to 6 hours in the sun a day.
Step 2 – Prep the Soil
Now that we have our minds (and hearts) set on specific flower types – and ideally arrangements, we are ready for the next step. Soil.
No garden can ever be healthy and beautiful without the right type of soil. Generally speaking, most types of flowering plants prefer well-drained, loose soil that contains a lot of organic material. Also, typically there is no need to dig deep – flowers will do just fine without it. The key thing to bear in mind here is that you need to leave enough space to be able to add some compost. This little trick will make a world of difference – improving both soil structure and providing valuable nutrients.
Step 3 – Planting
Time for the next, perhaps the most important step – planting. This part is pretty straightforward, especially if we’re using a seed packet. They always give specific directions to provide the best environment for your flowers. There’s a question of depth as well as spacing between two plants. Irises, for example, prefer to be planted shallowly.
If we’re replanting a flower from the pot, then things are a little different, however, usually the hole you dig should be as deep as a pot or the soil inside it.
Step 4 – Watering
To make sure all that hard work we’ve put in so far doesn’t go to waste, we have to water our plants or flowers properly, especially in the early stages. Every week, they need about 2 inches, but some would say 1 inch of moisture is enough. That of course can differ and some other factors need to be considered as well. If it hasn’t been raining lately for quite some time, it’s probably a good idea to give your flowers some more attention. We also recommend watering deeply and doing it less often – this will help the roots grow faster. A quick tip: scatter some mulch or pieces of bark around your plants – they won’t lose water so quickly.
Step 5 – Grooming
Always make sure to keep your garden clean. Any deadheads, old leaves or brown foliage have to go. If you groom, clip and cut your flowers regularly, you’ll garden is going to look absolutely amazing. But that’s not all – your flowers will get stronger, healthier and ready for winter. This step is often overlooked but in reality – it’s just as important as the rest of them. Did you know that some flowers bloom again when you remove their initial blooms?
Now that your garden is ready, it’s time to think about some accessories and decorations. If you’re feeling adventurous sign up for a creative workshop where you can learn how to make your own garden decorations. Pots, willow or wire sculptures will provide a perfect finishing touch to your lovely garden.
