It’s impossible to overestimate the importance of damage dealers in group high-key dungeon walkthroughs. There’s no good dungeon team without a skilled player of this type! If you really want to get a legendary Mythic 15 carry and hundreds of other valuable rewards, read this guide attentively.
So Who’s a DPS?
Actually, players of all the 10 classes in World of Warcraft can play as DPS (damage per second) group members. A good DPS player knows how to combine the right character spec and items to achieve the highest mob-smashing rate possible.
There are three main types of DPS:
- Ranged – in most cases, this type deals damage with attacks from the distance, such as arrows, spears, etc.
- Caster – this type includes all classes that can deal damage by casting spells, including druids, priests, shamans, warlocks, and mages.
- Melee – obviously, this type is most effective with melee attacks and includes death knights, paladins, rogues, warriors, and particular types of shamans, druids, and monks.
Top DPS
Although all WoW character classes can be DPS, there are several classes that are originally designed to work as DPS. They include:
- Hunters
- Mages
- Rogues
- Warlocks
Fairly enough, none of them can become excellent DPSers by default. The game still requires these classes to combine specs and gear in a specific way for the right results. But do they have any benefits from being pure DPS anyway? Well, the only way to check that is to analyze real-life statistics on this type of player.
From what we see from the game metadata analysis, the most successful 24 DPS currently include the following number of class types:
- 1 monk (the most powerful DPS ever)
- 3 mage
- 1 priest
- 3 warlock
- 3 rogue
- 1 paladin
- 2 druid
- 2 warrior
- 4 hunter
- 2 shaman
Almost all the existing main classes are here with mages, warlocks, hunters, and rogues on top! The statistics on the best-of-the-best groups of classes seem to prove the theory that pure DPS characters perform the best as there are more types of these classes on the chart. However, the Windwalker Monk type managed to occupy the first line!
But what do the figures on the average success rates say? Well, here we can observe the following number of types:
- 1 monk
- 2 mage
- 1 priest
- 3 warlock
- 3 rogue
- 1 paladin
- 2 druid
- 2 warrior
- 4 hunter
- 2 shaman
Wow! The figures are 90% identical, which only supports the theory. Besides, we can see that the legendary Windwalker Monks from the all-time top are not even in the top 10 with less than 9K points on average. This proves that the all-time leadership of Windwalker Monks is an exclusion from the rule. At the same time, as many as 3 types of rogues have positions in the top 10, including lines 1, 4, and 7 with over 9.2K points for each type.
What’s Better for You?
So why does it work the way it works? Obviously, pure DPS classes offer a more straightforward set of skills, specs, and gear that allows players to achieve proficiency through a less steep learning curve. That being said, you should develop a pure DPS if you want to have the least tricky path to leadership. If you’re that kind of a WoW player who seeks challenge, try to start with a non-DPS class and impress everyone with a unique approach to combining the gear and specs of your favorite class.
Now Sure?
It can be extremely tough to make the final decision and spend months developing a single class. Try to have several accounts with different classes to figure out your actual preferences first. Once you make the right class choice, your DPS performance will shoot.
