Before taking a college tour, students must prepare a college checklist. This is a list of materials that they need to bring with them before they leave for their tours. In most cases, this list will be made up of two pages: one that contains the name of the college they plan to visit; and one that
contains all the relevant information about that college, such as commencement date, location, and duration. However, students may decide to make separate checklists for each college they intend to visit. For example, if a student wants to visit Harvard University, they might make a separate checklist for that university. The purpose of the college checklist is to ensure that students are well prepared for college visits, in order to maximize the enjoyment that they get from these trips.
The college checklist will need to contain two pages. One page will have the name of the college or university that is being visited; and one page will have the name of the person or persons (usually the guidebook author) who organized the tour. In addition, the list should also include the names and addresses of every person or persons that will be involved with the tour, and their phone numbers. Students should keep this information in a secure place, such as in a locker or briefcase, so that they can always contact someone immediately if they need help.
If students are driving to their destination, make sure that they do a maintenance check on their vehicles to ensure safety, but also so they don’t run into any car trouble. Purchasing an auto extended warranty on cars like Toyota’s and Nissan’s are always advised so it can save from potential additional costs. Especially for college students, money is usually tight. Many parents will purchase a Nissan extended warranty or something alike to prevent any unforeseen issues causing greater stress, while going on these college tours or road trips in general.
Students should not expect to get a lot of time to relax and unwind while on a college tour. Most college visits last two days, and students will be required to be in class, reading, writing, and taking notes a lot. Therefore, students should plan ahead. A two day vacation could be extended if necessary, or a few nights in a hotel could be scheduled in advance, just in case there is a problem with the hotel’s availability. Furthermore, students should ensure that they are carrying a camera and some other small but valuable items with them, just in case their luggage is misplaced while they are roaming around.
There are some items on a college checklist that students should never miss. For example, there are usually a section for housing accommodations, a checklist that would tell students to look for a room with an available bathroom, and a section for transportation, such as renting a car. The housing accommodations section usually includes a contact phone number, and the checklist should include the name and phone number of a person in the building that is familiar with the amenities and can assist students with their needs. Finally, the transportation section of a college checklist should include a contact number for someone who can offer directions to the nearest bus or subway stop, or someone to call if the students have any questions or need assistance getting to class.
Another thing that should be on a checklist should be a list of important appointments, like class cancellations, test takers’ notice of due dates, and the registration of any special events (conferences, meetings, etc.). These types of things should also be checked off the college checklist when students leave the school, either by moving to another school or immediately transferring to a different school. Before moving to another school, it is important to make sure that these important items are on the new list.
Many college students fail to completely update their college checklist. Students should always check their list to make sure that all of the necessary items are on it, and not just the necessary things. If something is on the list but not needed, it can mean that the student doesn’t really need the item, and it could cost them money if they need the item and buy it, only to find out it isn’t needed when they enter the new school.
One last thing to remember when taking a college checklist is that it should include all financial aid programs and scholarships. Many financial aid programs require a student to fill out various forms every year, and the student should make sure they are on a list that is current. This is especially important for financial aid, because a student may have to start a new application in order to take advantage of certain aid programs. This list should list all of the scholarships and aid programs available to students, so that a new transfer can be made easier or more easily.
After students finish their college checklists, it is important to then compare their list to the school’s enrollment numbers. The school’s enrollment numbers will show how many students from that school have chosen to attend. If there are more students from the school on the new list than from the class who chose to attend, this can indicate that there is more interest in that class. If the numbers are the opposite, that means there may be less interest in that class. This can help a student choose the right college or classes.
