The sequel to 2017’s hit Hindi Medium will be hitting the theatres this Friday. Homi Adajania took the responsibility of taking the legacy of the film forward with Angrezi Medium. But will it be able to reach the bar set by the first part? If you are a fan of Irrfan Khan and his work, then I’m sure you won’t wait for the Angrezi Medium movie review before booking the tickets. But still, here is our take on the film.
The film stars Irrfan Khan and Radhika Madan as the father-daughter duo along with Kareena Kapoor Khan, Dimple Kapadia, and Deepak Dobriyal. Angrezi Medium will be releasing in theatres on 12th March 2020.
Angrezi Medium Movie Review
The film takes you on an emotional journey of a father who goes out of his way to fulfil his daughter’s ambitions to study abroad. Homi Adajania’s film touches the younger generation’s obsession of studying in foreign countries, neglecting the struggle that will follow for their family. Angrezi Medium also tries to bring other themes as well, but this seems to be the primary subject of the movie.
The film gives a sweet and small-town feel with the look and the consistent acting by the actors. They maintain the thick local accent, which entertains you throughout. As the story moves forward, the focus on the small-town traits comes out beautifully in multiple scenes.
While the first half of the film is engaging with a screenplay better than the second, the story seems to go haywire with too many themes being tried to fit in. Other than that there are various scenes that are written brilliantly with an exceptional performance by Irrfan Khan. He along with Deepak Dobriyal lifts up the mood of the film.
Angrezi Medium- Plot Analysis
Champak Bansal is a simple and small-town businessman from Udaipur, Rajasthan. An owner of the sweet shop chain called Ghasitaram, his life revolves around his teenage daughter, Tarika played by Radhika Madan and also involves a daily episode of bickering with his brother Gopi, the other Ghasitaram, played by Deepak Dobriyal.
Tarika will soon be graduating high school and dreams of exploring the world outside. She wants to embark another academic journey outside this small world of her father. Champak, unaware of what lies ahead agrees to her daughter’s wishes, but the situation turns ugly when he has to pay the hefty fees for her education. The film is all about the struggle of this loving and dedicated father who treads on the path to do whatever it takes for his daughter.
Angrezi Medium Movie- Cast Performances
We all are aware of the fact that Irrfan Khan shot for this movie while he was undergoing treatment. But this thought will not cross your mind, not even for a second as the actor is seen in his element, in every sequence, every frame. It’s like he takes you along with him on this journey, so you are crying with him, laughing with him and rejoicing with him in his victories.
Apart from Irrfan, Deepak Dobriyal has proved his fine acting skills one more time. He along with Irrfan Khan and their camaraderie tells how polished and prepared they are as actors.
Radhika Madan too plays an important role and pulls off the role of a clueless and mildly rebellious teenager nicely. Her chemistry with Irrfan is quite organic such that you will start to resonate with the two characters and their inner conflicts. The supporting cast also includes Kiku Sharda who is as usual funny along with Ranvir Shorey who plays the role of Bobby. His character is a refreshing twist to the story and as usual, this guy too never fails to impress the audience with his acting.
On the other hand, Kareena Kapoor Khan manages to add a little chaos in the life of our father and daughter with her small appearance. The dynamics of all the characters with each other is interesting.
Angrezi Medium Review- Songs and Background Score
The film is set in two different backgrounds. While half of the film is shot in the small city of Udaipur, the next half of the film is shot in London. And so the music and background score of the film is set keeping the different scenarios in mind. The composers have done a great job in that aspect, as it works out quite well with the mood of the story.
Check out the trailer of Angrezi Medium.
Angrezi Medium is an emotional story of a father and her daughter, with some powerful performances. Though it loses its grip, mostly in the storyline which seems to be a bit convenient, it holds strongly on the emotion. So if you are ready to take this message with you home then do go and watch the film.
