As restrictions around the country, and around the world, begin to ease, we can start to look forward to the return of some of our most well-known and loved sporting events. Although there will be a lower capacity crowd than usual, Royal Ascot 2021 does look likely to go ahead. Fans and bettors welcome this news as it has been far too long since we were all able to fully enjoy the sport of horse racing and the social events that it creates.
With excitement and expectation growing, we take a look at the Royal Ascot 2021 dress code and what to wear to Royal Ascot.
This year’s event has a clear focus not only on style – as always – but also on sustainability in fashion. There is a call for spectators to wear British fashion, but also to think about purchasing their outfits from charity shops and vintage emporiums.
Royal Enclosure
Men
When in the Royal Enclosure, it is important to adhere to the guidelines and expectations set by the event organizers. Men must wear black, grey or navy formal attire. A waistcoat must be worn along with a tie. Note that cravats and bow ties are not permitted in the Royal Enclosure. A top hat is also mandatory, and this must be grey or black. Shoes must be black and with socks. Serving military personnel are permitted to wear service dress.
Boys
Boys aged 10-17 are expected to dress in line with men in the enclosure. However, they are permitted to wear a dark colored lounge suit with shirt and tie if preferred.
Women
Women are required to wear formal day clothes. Skirts should be of modest length and dresses and tops should have straps measuring at least one inch in width. Trouser suits are permitted, and should be full length. Both pieces of the trouser suit should also match in terms of color. Hats must be worn, and fascinators are not permitted.
Girls
Girls aged 10-17 should comply with the guidelines given for women. However, they are permitted to wear a fascinator rather than a hat.
Queen Anne Enclosure
Men
A suit, of matching color, should be worn together with a collared shirt and tie. Socks must be worn and must cover the ankle.
Boys
Boys aged 10-17 should wear a suit like the men. However, those under the age of ten are not required to wear a suit, but must be smartly dressed.
Women
Women must wear formal dress in the Queen Anne Enclosure. A head piece, hat or fascinator must be worn at all times. Off the shoulder dresses are not permitted, and the midriff must be covered at all times. Trouser suits can be worn, but must be formal and must be full-length.
Girls
Girls under the age of 17 are expected to wear as if dressed for a smart and formal occasion. Hats and fascinators may be worn, but are not compulsory for girls.
